Swim Tips

Start with one swim session a week and build up to two or three times a week. It will help if you join a local club or have some private lessons -Exeter triathlon Club offers coached swimming sessions for all levels. This will help you to improve your stroke and enable you to swim faster and more efficiently - and swimming with others makes it more fun. It makes sense for your first one or two triathlons to be sprint events with a pool swim - leave the open water events until you have some race experience.

Longer races have swims in open water, and unless the water is very warm you will have to wear a wetsuit during your swim. You can get a specialist triathlon wetsuit (a scuba or surf wetsuit is unsuitable) from the main triathlon gear suppliers. Open water swimming is very different to the pool so you should try a test swim before you do a race. In your first open water swim race, start near the back of the field or someone may swim over you! Swim at a comfortable pace - don't worry about what others around you are doing.
