This being one of the (if not the) toughest middle distance triathlons in the world. The club has had success in recent years where members have qualified for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships through this event. This year was no exception with Pete Wiliby successfully stepping up to this distance for the first time by winning his age group 25-29. Congratulations to Pete. What's more impressive is that he finished the race in 11th overall, only a few minutes behind the pros. In fact his T2 was faster than some of them and his run was only a few seconds slower than the overall winner Mikel Elgezabal. The club results at Ironman 70.3 UK were as follows. Well Done Neil, a fantastic result. The Windsor Triathlon is a one of the most competitive triathlons in the British Triathlon calendar. He smashed his previous best by nearly 5 minutes, we would put it down to his stonking bike split, averaging 38KPH! Other members had raced in the European Triathlon Championships in Pontevedra, Spain. Bude Triathlon, GE Blenheim Triathlon, Dambuster Triathlon, Children's Open Water Triathlon in Eton and Ironman France to name a few. Next month (July) highlights in the calendar are the Bristol Harbourside Triathlon where at least 20 members wil be racing. It is followed two weeks later by the club championships in Plymouth. The regional committee had been looking for a volunteer to run the series for some time, so the relaunch was delayed in 2011. MOTI Run-Tri stores have now stepped in to support and administer the series. We look forward to the new format encouraging triathletes to try races in all corners of the SW region. The series was created to enable age group athletes in the south west to compete within their age group catagories across a range of races. For 2011 there are 11 races starting on 26 June and ending on 18 Sept. To compete in the series you need to be a member of British Triathlon and be able to compete in at least 2 of the events. After each event, scores are allocated for each athlete in your age group. Your best 2 scores count towards your age group points in the series. Rob and Griff did about 100 miles, Nicky Q took a group who did a little less, and James took us slower ones and we managed approx 50 miles in just under 5 hours. We stopped for coffee, then lunch, and made sure we saw the island and enjoyed the ride. The climbs up Fire Mountain stand out, along with the road to Femes  which was really only suitable for mountain goats  and James and Andy  the rest of us decided to exercise our walking muscles at this point and enjoy the scenery!" Members meet in the Car Park at the bottom of Beach Road. There you will register,pay and you will be given a wristband for your safety. Hand this back in to a member who will be collecting wristbands by the sea wall as you finish the session. Swimmers have a choice of two or three groups led by experienced sea swimmers and followed by lifeguards from the surf club on rescue boards. The more experienced group usually swim 2000-2500 metres. Less proficient swimmers do about half that distance. For the first few weeks there will be a beginners group with a coach doing specific skills, to enable athletes to become comfortable with open water swimming. Groups will be led by a one or two leaders, who will be in red swim hats and can swim for free. Please see the lead coach if you wish to be a group leader. The sea swim starts at 7pm. If you arrive 10-15 minutes before hand, that will give you enough time to change into your wetsuit and register before the start of the session. Cost is £2 for club members, if you are not a member and wish to join our open water sea swims, the cost is £3. Non-members can swim on up to two occassions as a trial before joining our club. Thank you to all those who have given positive comments and suggestions about the race so far, keep them coming.  It proved to be another successful race with some good and notable debut performances. The conditions were a little warmer, but breezier this year. There were also one or two rain showers for the latter competitors.  The sprint triathlon race was won overall by Pete Norris of RAF Tri, in an overall time of 01:00:34. A few seconds clear of Exeter Tri Club's Wim Korving who finished in 2nd for the second year running, but in an improved time of 01:01:10. Alan Ward of Plymouth Tri finished in 3rd, again in successive years in a time of 01:02:39.  Lucy Commander (Exeter Tri) made her debut triathlon and won the female title in a very impressive time of 01:11:24. Only fourteen seconds off the women s course record set by the former Windsor Triathlon champion Sam Herridge in 2007. Lucy is on a roll, last week she won the Great West Run (Half Marathon) and only couple weeks prior to that represented GB for the first time in the European Duathlon Championships, and came away with a Bronze Medal.  The ever present Sue Walker finished in second (1st in the FV40 age group category), in a time of 01:12:45. Jacqueline Rice came third (1st in the FV50 age group category), her time was 01:16:57. Claire Hodgson also in her debut triathlon (1:16:40) was the 2nd female senior (5th female overall) to finish and Chiara Magarotto (01:21:08) was the 3rd senior female to finish.  The age-group category winners were: Sam Jackson (Male Junior, 5th Overall), Mark Alderman (M40-49), David Monk (M50-59), Richard Congdon (M60+), Adele Martin (Female Youth), Sue Walker (F40-49), Jacqueline Rice (F50-59) and Peggy Crome (F60+).  In the Novice race, Gary Ashelford won in a time of 57:33, Graham Turner came 2nd, and Hamish Pegg finished 3rd. Anne-Marie Selway was the first female home. All novices can class themselves no longer a novice!  Thank you to all the marshals and helpers for their hard work throughout the event. A special thanks to our new sponsor this year Tri-Topia, they kindly donated a week s training holiday with them in France to a random race competitor. The lucky person to be drawn out of the hat was Fiona Campbell of North Devon Tri. She also scooped third place in the Female V40 age group category. The race pack will be available this coming Tuesday (26th April). These sprint and novice races will be held at Exe Valley Leisure Centre, Tiverton in Devon in just over two weeks time. Each race consists of an indoor pool swim (400m for the sprint or 200m for the novice), a bike ride (24km for the sprint or 20km for the novice) and a run (5km for the sprint or 3km for the novice). This year's race of 350 competitors sold out in record time, if you missed the chance to enter the race this year, do re-visit this page in the coming weeks for details on how to enter next years event. For those who have entered, registration will open on the day of the event from 7am. First novice wave begins at 8am and the first sprint wave begins at 8.40am. See the table below for the event race pack and all wave times with estimated swim times. Results will appear on this page with 24 hours of the event. Please take the time to check your race number and start time, also that you haven't been missed out. You should aim to arrive about one hour prior to your race time. Registration will stay open as long as it needs to be so those of you starting later don't need to arrive early to register. Car parking at the leisure centre is very limited. Use the town centre car parking, or Morrisons nearby which will charge you £5. Novices will be given a yellow sticker, this should be stuck to the front of the helmet to indicate to marshalls that you are a Novice, this should ensure that you are turned round at the correct point on the bike course. You should also look out for signs indicating Novice turn ahead. If any of you find you cannot compete dur to injury/illness etc, please let Andy Evans know. Whilst we can't offer any refunds we do have a waiting list of reserves and if we can refill your place we will be happy to defer your entry to 2012. This will not apply to anyone who just doesn't turn up on the day. The club has decided to increase the membership fees for 2011. They have not changed for several years and we still feel that they represent good value for money. There are 4 categories of membership which are: Junior (&#xA3;5), Student (&#xA3;15), Associate (&#xA3;15), Full (&#xA3;25). Fees for training at the pool, the track, and for tubro/circuits have also been increased for 2011. Again these have been held artificially low for years and the club's costs have increased, but will still be incredibly good value at &#xA3;2 per session. You can join either online or through a paper-based form which can be found on the membership page. Please note the club AGM will be taking place on 11th January at Exeter College.
